The music written for and inspired by the Batman movie was more of a self contained Prince album than a soundtrack. It was a big success - riding on the back of a blockbusting film that broke box office records in the year of release and went on to become one of Prince's biggest selling albums. The worldwide sales of 4.4 million for Batman were the largest for any Prince album since Purple Rain. The album sold over 2 million copies in the US, and reached number one on both Billboard and UK Pop Charts. After the complex musical arrangements of Lovesexy, Prince was back in commercial mode. Apart from a foray into what can loosely be described as 'techno-house music' with "Batdance", the album offered little in the way of what Prince hadn't done before musically. An enjoyable album nevertheless.

Give us your thoughts about this album (good or bad). What does it mean to you and where does it figure in your collection. Discuss the songs and vote in our poll for your favourite track.

The album was quickly recorded in six weeks -- from mid-February to late March 1989 -- and Prince used three tracks recorded earlier: "Electric Chair" was recorded in June 1988; "Scandalous" in October 1988; and "Vicki Waiting" in December 1988. The album was performed entirely by Prince, with a few exceptions. Sheena Easton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheena_Easton) duets with Prince on "The Arms of Orion." "Trust" features a sampled horn part by Eric Leeds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Leeds) and Atlanta Bliss (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanta_Bliss). "The Future" features strings by Clare Fischer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clare_Fischer) sampled from the (then unreleased) 1986 track "Crystal Ball." "The Future" also samples the Sounds of Blackness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sounds_of_Blackness) choir. "Batdance" includes a sample of Prince's technician Matthew Larson, and "Partyman" features the vocal performance of then girlfriend Anna Garcia (credited as Anna Fantastic).
In 1990, it won a Brit Award for best soundtrack/score. The album also debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 charts, and went multi-platinum in the United States. The album has sold 11 million copies worldwide.

I have to go for "Scandalous"...one of the smoothest romantic ballard's you'll ever get to here...:)

Tough one, but I picked Electric Chair for the guitar work.

The immediate answer that came to mind was Batdance. I think that was because I don’t listen to it that often and Batdance is what popped into my head. But I just listened to the entire thing and I like Trust best.

i remember when i very first heard batdance before the single was released and i thought if prince kept on making music like that i wouldn't be buying it anymore. it was similar to the bomb the bass style cut and paste music that was filling the charts. i thought he had changed style and the rest of the album would be like that. obviously the track has grown on me since

i also remember getting my hands on the remix cd single and thinking it was fantastic, as william orbit from s-express had remixed it, and i loved s-express at the time. obviously he went on to bigger things with his electronica solo albums, and became well known due to his work on ray of light for madonna, and then his electronic classical music album which was hailed by the likes of the guardian as a masterpeice, even though he just copied wendy carloss idea

it's hard to pick favourite prince tracks like this, but partyman is one of my favourites, in particular the video mix. the video is probably my favourite of the prince videos, and batdance is close

vicki waiting is also another great under rated track. it was nice to for him to do it live during his 95/96 tours

i think the album really helps make the movie. it's a shame there are the unreleased extended and instrumental versions on the movie that never got released

I liked Vicky Waiting the best, it had that cool melody to it and the same goes for Electric Chair. :) I like Partyman, but I love watching the music video on my DVR. The dancing was funkalishis!!!

I love how the man slapped the bass all over this album, i voted the future as it has a dark overtone that tells something of the story inspiring this album and sets a brilliant tone for the rest of the songs to come. to those who voted scandalous, i agree it is one of his very very best ballads but i could only vote for it in the category of ballads, he is at his best when he's rocking it up.
how many of you out there can pick your favorite prince song? i never can............... today i plump for....hmmm..... let's say...."I'm Yours"
peace and love
