Jackson To Take Residency At The O2

Sky News understands that, after years of rumours, Michael Jackson has finally agreed to perform a string of concerts in London this summer.

The 50-year-old will end his exile as a live performer by staging a residency at the O2 Arena, in one of the biggest comebacks in pop history.
While the exact dates of the shows are yet to be revealed, Sky sources say that Jackson (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/Michael%20Jackson) has exchanged contracts with the venue and is now committed to return to live performance.
The first dates of the concerts will be confirmed at a news conference on Thursday at the O2 (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/The%20O2).
Jackson will appear in person to make a "special announcement", his spokeswoman confirmed.
A small number of shows will be released initially but more dates will go on sale, emulating Prince's successful 21-night stay at the venue in 2006, if interest in the shows is as high as promoters expect.

It seems inevitable that the concerts, which sources say are the only live shows he is planning, will sell out instantly but what is never certain with Jackson is his behaviour.
In his prime he was unquestionably one of the all-time greats: a sublime singer, a thrilling dancer and a songwriter whose gifts were such that he wrote the highest-selling album of all time - Thriller.
However, that peak was a long time ago.
Since the 80s Jackson has appeared to be increasingly damaged in every area of his life.
The surgery has robbed him of his looks, the eccentricities have robbed him of his cool, the recurrent child abuse allegations (all of which he was cleared of) and the money worries have clearly taken a huge toll.
When Jackson last appeared in London at the World Music Awards in 2006 he was able only to mime to a few bars of We Are The World before leaving the stage.

And when he appeared in public in Las Vegas just before his 50th birthday last August he looked weaker than ever. Dressed in pyjama trousers, he appeared gaunt and frail.
It has long been said that Jackson's health was the main reason he had not agreed to stage a comeback tour, with various rumours surrounding the reason for his weight loss.
Jackson is understood to be in the UK and is staying at the Lanesborough Hotel in London’s Hyde Park.
While there has been no confirmation on the record about the shows, sources close to the star have spoken of his excitement at his live return.
An insider said his health has improved markedly in recent months, described him as looking "much better" and stressed that the concerts "will be amazing".

Whether he has been able to work on his fitness to sustain a residency will be one of the key questions ahead of this series of dates.
But it may be that Jackson's finances are now in such a state of disrepair that quite simply has no choice but to go back to work.
The gates of Neverland have closed, the possessions from his fairytale home are to be auctioned and he has had to turn to various sources for loans.
If he were to emulate Prince's record residency at the 18,000-capacity O2 then he could play to an estimated half a million fans, which according to some experts could generate in theory up to £50m.
If he can repair his finances or his reputation through this residency remains to be seen, but there is no doubt it will be fascinating to watch him.
Whether it's a car crash or a triumph as always with the former child star it will undoubtedly be compelling.
Many will be astonished just to see him back on a stage and cynics will say, regardless of contracts, that there is plenty of time for Jackson to have second thoughts before he steps out on the stage of Britain's biggest arena.
Ultimately, as with all the greats, what remains is the sheer quality of the music and Jackson's best work is up there with the greatest musicianship of the 20th century.
If Jackson can reclaim just a little of his genius to do them justice then this residency would be the most unlikely of triumphs. We shall see.

I can't see him making it through one gig after seeing him at the press conference.

What a sad and sorry sight.

Andre Paine, London
Michael Jackson has confirmed his July residency at London's O2 arena during a press conference at the venue, describing it as the "final curtain call."

Hundreds of screaming fans turned up for the announcement, as well as members of the media, after promoters AEG Live posted a message on the 23,000-capacity venue's Web site inviting people to attend.

"Thank you all... this is it," said Jackson, who appeared an hour and a half late at 5.30pm. "I just wanted to say, these will be my final show performances in London. When I say this is it, it really means this is it. I'll be performing the songs my fans want to hear. This is it, this is really it, this is the final curtain call."

He added: "I'll see you in July and... I love you. I really do, you have to know that, from the bottom of my heart. This is it and see you in July."

The first date is July 8 and tickets go on sale March 13. Tickets are priced £50 ($70) to £75 ($106). Full details will be announced later.
Posters advertising 10 shows, also stating 'This is it,' appeared on the London Underground before the announcement.

The statement issued announcing the residency says that Jackson's O2 shows will be "history in the making as the King of Pop Michael Jackson performs in London for the last time."

Rob Hallett, president international touring, AEG Live, said in the statement: "We are delighted to facilitate the return of the King of Pop, long may he reign! Michael at the O2 this summer will surely be the highlight of the musical year.

"When Michael Jackson performs, the eyes of the world will be watching. Look out for an International flavor to the audience, as this will be his only concerts in the world this year."

Billboard.com had already revealed details of the residency and, earlier today, AEG president and CEO Tim Leiweke told the audience (http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/michael-jackson-may-play-25-london-shows-1003948204.story) at the Billboard Music & Money Symposium that Jackson is likely to perform a total of 20 to 25 shows at the O2 Arena once further dates are added to the initial 10 shows.

"We spent two years working with Michael trying to get him comfortable with this," said Leiweke, during his keynote Q&A at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. He added that the singer is "very focused."

Jackson has not released a studio album or played a full concert since 2001. His last major tour was the HIStory World Tour in 1996-1997.

Michael Jackson “This Is It” LAST TOUR In London ONLY!

http://exposedtolife.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/mjthisisit-copy.jpg?w=500&h=287 (http://exposedtolife.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/mjthisisit-copy.jpg)

Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” final tour has been announced! Get this… he is doing 10 shows ONLY in London at the O2 Arena. Is this fair to Michael’s fans? Why London? Why not at least do one show on each continent? After all this is Michael Jackson and his fans are all over this planet! It is not fair… That’s like Prince announcing his last ever show would be in Tokyo or some place. Wait; speaking of Prince, didn’t he exclusively play 21 dates at the O2 Arena in 2007 as a part of his European tour. Like with Michael Jackson, I am not sure if you can call it a tour if you are exclusively at one venue, in one city, and in one country. So far, I like the way they are marketing the tour. The press conference sums it all up with the crazed fans worshiping and hanging on to MJ’s every word. Also, the website www.MichaelJacksonLive.com (http://www.michaeljacksoliven.com/) is genius. It’s simple, clean, and has just enough information to keep you in suspense. As a huge fan of Will.I.Am, I love the Thriller interview he conducted interviewing some of today’s biggest recording artists including Quincy Jones, Mary J. Blidge, and Beyonce. The highlight of the website for me was the sizzle reel. As I sat, watched, and listened I was overwhelmed listening to all of Michael’s hits.
For those fans that want to purchase tickets, good luck as it seems to be next to impossible. Fans have to register just for pre-sale tickets. I know I have… For those that are not interested in going to London for the show, if nothing else, do yourself a favor and log on to the site and click the “listen” button on the right side. There are well over 25 of Michael Jackson’s hits ready for your listening pleasure. Treat yourself to some great memories.

Michael Jackson’s Dome conundrum (http://853blog.wordpress.com/2009/03/06/michael-jacksons-dome-conundrum/)

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45540000/jpg/_45540445_006977666-1.jpg (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7927497.stm)I can’t help but be intrigued by Michael Jackson’s decision to stage his comeback up the road at the Dome (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7925388.stm) - rather than the announcement of a serious of concerts (with a $400m carrot attached (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7927497.stm)), it’s become a will he-won’t he mystery, and there’ll be general amazement if he actually makes it as far as the first night, scheduled for July 8. Even the initial announcement was surrounded by the kind of not-particularly-slick cock-ups that someone who persists in calling themselves the “King of Pop” really should be avoiding - the appearance of ads for the shows on the Tube before the announcement was made; and his trademark lateness, the announcement was meant to be made at 4pm yesterday, at that time his people carrier was stuck in heavy traffic by the Tower of London. (Excited journalists parroted nonsense lines about him arriving by helicopter, but if the Dome helipad’s still there it’s hardly secure, and it’s a bit too close to London City Airport’s flightpad for comfort anyway.)

Heaven knows what it must have been like down there - hundreds of fans waiting to see this mysterious figure in the flesh, other fans arriving early for X Factor Live (http://xfactor.itv.com/tour.htm) (no accounting for taste, etc), and a few thousand people trying to get home. I was a long way away, watching things on telly, so missed the fun.
I’ve seen Jackson in the flesh - outside the Oxford Union when he addressed it in 2001 - and he was hours late then, too. In the rain. And what struck me then is what struck me watching him arrive in Greenwich on TV - just how bloody frail he seems. This stooped figure getting out of a people carrier surely couldn’t be related to the nimble moonwalker of two decades ago, surely? But yes, they’re one and the same man. Watching him address his fans in half-sentences, though, he began to look stronger - as if he’d fed off the energy of these devoted followers. Sure, many of those who screamed “Michael!” at him are a bit special, shall we say - but he needs them just as much as they need him.
So, 10 shows are planned for the Dome - with rumours circulating that he has an option to extend the O2 run to 50 performances. Only he (or his doctors) can know if he’ll manage the initial run. But does the public really lack the appetite for any more? Prince did 21 nights (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7006425.stm) two years ago, charged £31.21 for them (plus 21 seperately-priced aftershows, although he didn’t actually appear at them all) and didn’t sell them all out until a couple of weeks before the end of his seven-week run. But sell them out he did - many went two or more times - and the purple fella, who is also 50, is now held in huge public regard. Despite not being a massive fan myself, I went to four concerts, including an aftershow which ranks as probably the best gig I have ever been to. There are thousands who’ll remember the summer of 2007 for those shows.
Meanwhile, Britney Spears is also planning a lengthy run, but she’s young enough, her fanbase is young enough, and her recent life has been intriguing enough (her affairs are still legally controlled by her dad after her problems in early 2008) to allow her to get away with it - even if she does bloody mime (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7925555.stm).
But Michael Jackson is not held in the same public affection as Prince or Britney. He can’t compete with Prince’s musicianship and sheer gall, and he doesn’t have the same pop star lustre that Britney has. He was found not guilty of child abuse (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/entertainment/2005/michael_jackson_on_trial/default.stm) but the embarrassing revelations and the battle to clear his name has cleaned him out of public respect and cash. Jarvis Cocker’s protest about him at the Brit Awards was 13 years ago, but that shows just how ingrained prejudice against him is. A journalist who attended the announcement told me before Jackson arrived at the O2 that his fans’ cries of “Michael!” were being met with equally lusty cries of “wanker!” from passers-by. (I doubt he’ll be repeating his football pitch appearances - last seen at Fulham and Exeter City - at Charlton.) Sure, he has a dedicated fanbase, and there will be younger fans for who may not share the same cynicism. He’ll have to win the London public over. Wil he manage it?
It’ll be an interesting summer at the Dome. Perhaps not for the reasons the O2’s bosses would like it to be, though.

The BBC is reporting (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7940515.stm) that Michael Jackson has committed to playing 50 shows at London’s O2 - five times what was originally announced last week (http://playhappy.wordpress.com/2009/03/05/michael-jackson-to-play-10-show-curtain-call-in-london/) and twice what was rumored (http://playhappy.wordpress.com/2009/03/05/michael-jackson-to-play-10-show-curtain-call-in-london/) would be the maximum number of shows. Some 360,000 pre-sale tickets have been sold so far and if all 50 dates sell out, Jackson will have sold a million seats for the run of shows.
In just the pre-sale phase, Jackson has already beat the previous record-holder for ticket sales at O2: Prince’s 21-night sold-out stint that sold over 350,000 tickets.
The rate of ticket sales has also set a new record: 33 tickets per minute.
