Macy's hopes Prince strikes youthful chord

Pop superstar Prince
The concert is part of a strategy to make the Nicollet Mall store more than a place to buy pumps.
By Chris Serres and Jon Bream, Star Tribune
Can a man who wears purple suits and high heels help restore a sense of glamour to a downtown department store?
On July 7, Prince will perform at least seven songs in the eighth-floor auditorium of the Macy's store on Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis. The performance is part of an ambitious effort by Macy's to recreate the sort of excitement that existed at the Nicollet Mall store decades ago.
Back then, women still dressed up to shop at Dayton's, as the store was known, and live acts and celebrity appearances were a regular occurrence.
Macy's executives hope to bring downtown events, carnivals, concerts, "you name it," to the Nicollet Mall store, said Michelle Mesenburg, vice president of events at Macy's North, which has 64 stores in the Midwest. Its eighth floor is about the size of a high-school auditorium but is vacant much of the year.
"The opportunities are endless," Mesenburg said.
The downtown store hasn't had major music acts since the 1960s, when the British rock band the Yardbirds (featuring Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page) performed there.
"Retail should be theater," said Frank Guzzetta, chief executive officer and chairman of Macy's North, the eight-state division of parent Federated Department Stores Inc. "This will help take us back to the roots of the department store, when it was all about having the newest, biggest, freshest ideas."
Guzzetta is fighting a double whammy. Downtown department stores have been dying for decades, typically too big and expensive to support a dwindling shopping base that has largely moved to suburban malls and discount stores.
And the Macy's chain has been reeling from a public relations backlash ever since it dropped the name Marshall Field's last September. Sales have also been hurt by a cutback in promotions, which Federated has promised to reverse.
"What we've seen is that the Macy's brand really hasn't connected well with loyal Field's shoppers," said David Brennan, co-director of the Institute for Retailing Excellence at the University of St. Thomas.
Some longtime shoppers are boycotting the downtown Marshall Field's flagship store on Chicago's State Street. In the Twin Cities, the number of shoppers who said they've shopped at Macy's within the past three months fell to 25 percent in 2006 from 29 percent a year earlier, according to surveys by Scarborough Research, a consumer and media research firm based in New York.
Federated does not break out individual store performance. But CEO Terry Lundgren said sales at stores that have been recently converted to the Macy's name were "disappointing" in the first quarter. J.P. Morgan analyst Charles Grom estimated that sales in those stores have fallen an average of 7.1 percent over the last four months.
The 48-year-old Prince, who performed at this year's Super Bowl, might not be the most cutting-edge musician Macy's could bring in, but store executives are still betting that he can attract younger shoppers who have turned away from department stores in favor of specialty chains and discounters like Target.
"Putting Prince in there is an interesting way of saying, 'We're still where it's happening,' " said Bob Bartlett, a retail consultant from San Rafael, Cal. "It makes the downtown store the center of attention again."
But the event might never have happened were it not for Macy's marketing muscle and its track record of organizing special events, Guzzetta noted. StarTribune.com (http://startribune.com/) is a sponsor of the event.
Over the past 18 months, Macy's North has attracted a half-dozen celebrities, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez, to its stores in Minneapolis and Chicago. For the launch of Parker's fragrance, the downtown Minneapolis store laid a pink carpet down the main aisle; more than 2,500 people came to see her.
By contrast, the Mall of America has had a virtual three-ring circus of celebrities. Singer Mariah Carey, former heavyweight champion George Foreman and TV star Carson Kressley are among the many who have appeared there.
When buyers with Macy's North first approached Prince's marketing team in February, they gave the rock artist a laptop with the brass logo of 3121 on the top. They opened the laptop and played a two-minute video presentation showing appearances by Beyonce and Lopez among screaming fans in Macy's stores.
Their pitch was to have a performance in Minneapolis coincide with the exclusive launch of Prince's new perfume, "3121," on July 7.
Knowing that Prince had a fascination with the number 7, the video also pointed out that Macy's name, in numerology, adds up to seven. "On the seventh day of the seventh month of the seventh year ... We will show the world the power of 3121 and Macy's," said the video, which was narrated by a former backup singer for Prince.
Mesenburg and the special events team at Macy's North presented Prince with a range of options. One of them was a concert on the rooftop of the Macy's store, in which spectators would surround the outside on Nicollet Mall.
The group spent three months in discussions before finally agreeing on a live performance in the eighth floor auditorium before 1,400 people. The concert will occur at 4 p.m. and be followed by a performance at the Target Center. For $250, fans will get to see both events as well as purchase Prince's perfume a month before it goes on sale.
Macy's only request was that Prince sing "Purple Rain." but there is no guarantee that will occur. The event is similar to those that the downtown store used to hold when it was still Dayton's, noted Jim McComb, a Minneapolis retail consultant. Back then, the store went out of its way to attract younger shoppers, and even had a Teen Board that would help organize fashion shows and other events, he said.

Thanks to a stage towel she snagged during one of Prince's Las Vegas shows this winter - which she now keeps preserved in a Ziploc bag - Julie Lyons of Blaine has a pretty good idea of how Prince smells when he's performing.
So how does the Purple One's new 3121 fragrance compare?
"It's not exactly the same, but it's close," Lyons said. "I do like it, and I'll definitely wear it. I don't want to have to start washing my sheets in it - but I might."
Lyons was first in line this morning at Macy's in downtown Minneapolis to purchase what's been dubbed the "Ultimate Prince Xperience." It includes a custom T-shirt, two bottles of 3121 perfume and a ticket to Prince's July 7 Target Center show. But what drove Lyons and hundreds of

other fans to line up downtown was the final part of the package, a ticket to see an exclusive Prince show for 1,400 on Macy's eighth floor a few hours before the Target Center gig. The package went on sale at 10 a.m. today and the only place to purchase it was in person at Macy's. Lyons showed up at 6 a.m. Thursday to secure her place in line with two fellow fans who flew into town for the chance to pick up tickets, Kim Simpson of Detroit and Eleanor Garcia from Oakland, Calif. Combined, the trio have seen Prince perform hundreds of times.
"It's been great, like a family reunion," said Simpson, whose perky attitude masked the fact that she'd spent the past 27-some hours camped out on a sidewalk.
We offered fans waiting in line a sample spritz of 3121 to gauge their reaction to the scent, which will go on sale to the general public on July 7. Publicity materials describe it as a blend of about a dozen distinct fragrances including bergamot, jasmine, gardenia and patchouli. "It starts out floral," said Garcia. "I like it once it settles in and gets a little more spicy."
Floral was the most common description among those who sampled 3121, which is marketed toward women.
"It's really refreshing," said 25-year-old Marie Walter from Minneapolis. "But I want the total effect. I want to see him, smell him and hear him. I want him to sweat on me." North Carolina's Barbara Leonard echoed that sentiment: "Yes, yes, yes. It captures home for me, and when I say home, I mean Paisley Park. It's like heaven on earth."

Prince makes fans wait - but delivers on stage
BY ROSS RAIHALA Pop Music Critic

Prince never meant to cause us any sorrow and he never meant to cause us any pain. He only wants to see us standing in the ... blistering heat.
Indeed, the 49-year-old Minneapolis native's three-gig, 7/7/07 marathon Saturday in downtown Minneapolis involved, for many, seemingly endless periods of waiting around, often in the steamy outdoors where temperatures reached the upper 90s.
But, man, the moment he took the stage, all was instantly forgiven. He opened his Target Center show with a breathtaking "Purple Rain," complete with old Revolution mate Wendy Melvoin on guitar, and it was the sort of transcendent moment those in the sold-out crowd will tell their grandkids about.
The day started with a promotional gig on the eighth floor of Macy's, when a grinning Prince Rogers Nelson announced from the small, simple stage: "Minneapolis, I am here!" It was a promotional tie-in to help launch his new fragrance 3121 and, judging by the worldwide press he's already received, it did its job before Prince had even played a note.
The packed house of about 1,400 fans - many of whom camped out when the tickets went on sale last month - waited more than an hour past Prince's scheduled start time of 4 p.m., standing shoulder-to-shoulder in anticipation. Few appeared to be reserving energy for what would become a long night, with the headlining concert at the Target Center followed by a hotly anticipated First Avenue after-show.
So what did Prince give the Macy's crowd in return? Clad in a smart white suit and oversized shades, he sauntered in as his horn-enhanced band played "When the Saints Come Marching In" and delivered a brisk, but memorable, performance. While contracted to play only seven songs - yet another reference to his love of that number - Prince busted out some lesser-known '80s hits ("Girls and Boys," "Take Me with U"), a pair of tracks from his 2006 disc "3121" (the title cut and "Get Back on the Boat"), one bona fide classic ("Let's Go Crazy"), a savvy cover (Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy"), two songs with his special guest Sheila E. ("A Love Bizarre," "The Glamorous Life") and a blazing tear through his new single "Guitar."
Meanwhile, in that dripping heat, another 1,500 or so fans waited outside First Avenue to buy tickets to what would be Prince's first gig at the club in 20 years. And after that, the Target Center's doors didn't open for more than an hour after scheduled, presumably because Prince was running late from Macy's.
But, again, when Prince took the stage at 10 p.m., only the grumpiest in the crowd could hold a grudge. From the opening notes of "Purple Rain" to a reprise of "Take Me with U" and an even hotter take on "Guitar," Prince was operating in overdrive mode. Heck, he even whipped out a killer cover of the Cars' "Let's Go" and followed it up with a soulful, show-stopping "Satisfied."
Prince was still onstage at press time, with the First Avenue gig almost certainly not taking place until well past midnight.
"If y'all got a cell phone, you better call the babysitter," Prince said at one point. "Because we're gonna be here all night."

Prince Thrills Fans With 3 Minneapolis Shows
http://img.viacomlocalnetworks.com/images_sizedimage_314185506/sm Jason DeRusha (http://wcco.com/bios/local_bio_161103707.html)
Three concerts, one night. Prince sold out shows at three separate Minneapolis venues Saturday night.
His first show was on the eighth floor of the Minneapolis Macy's Store. Prince was there to launch his new perfume, 3121. He opened his set with a song by the same name, playing in front of approximately 1,200 people. Prince was scheduled to play seven songs in this intimate venue.
WCCO-TV News Anchor John Reger was in attendance. "Prince is such a great performer," said Reger. "It's one of the best shows I've seen."
His second show was at Target Center. It was scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m., but the doors to Target Center were not even open to ticket-holders at that time. Prince is known for late starts, but the doors were supposed to open at 7:30 p.m. According to Target Center spokesperson Courtney Hasko "the doors were held an hour per the tour." Hasko said that the Macy's concert started an hour late. That pushed the Target Center concert back as well. By 9:00 p.m. the line was slowly moving into the arena.
Either way, the big attraction for many die-hard Prince fans was the surprise after-party at First Avenue. Prince last played live at First Avenue in 1987. He made the bar famous in his 1984 movie "Purple Rain."
Fans lined up starting early Friday night. More than 1,000 people winded around the building, hoping for a chance to get into the show.
Lia McWhorter came to Minneapolis from Birmingham, Alabama because, she said, "He wasn't coming to see me, so I had to come to him."
Some fans who lined up Friday were issued presale numbers, so they didn't have to spend all day Saturday waiting for in the 90 degree heat.
"We're Prince proud," said fan Dani McFarland. "And he loves Minneapolis too."
Haley Gienow spent nearly 18 hours in line. She flew to Minneapolis from Niagra Falls, Canada. Her plan after getting tickets was to "wash up the sweat, rest up and get ready to scream and have some fun."
One of the people outside First Avenue was one of the first mentors in Prince's Minneapolis music career. Pepe Willie helped Prince get started from his Minneapolis home in 1975.
"I mean Prince is bringing it back home. Now he's coming back and you know he appreciates all his fans," said Willie. "Believe it or not, I knew he was who he would be today."
There's no way to know when Prince's after-party would begin. No doubt it would start late. Just how late? Dani McFarland didn't care. "I hope he plays forever tonight."

Police pull plug on Prince @ First Ave; read what he didn’t play (http://www.startribune.com/blogs/poplife/?p=325)
Sunday, July 8th, 2007 by Jon Bream
“We’re at First Avenue,” Prince said as he strummed the beginning of “Controversy’ “We gotta do it.”
Shortly after he sang “wish there were no rules,” Prince caved into the rules. “The authorities say we gotta go,” he said 70 minutes into his late, late set that started at 2:45 a.m. Sunday.”We always listen to the authorities. I promise I’ll be back.”
He was 15 songs into a planned 24-tune set. Here’s what he played — and didn’t get to play.
1. 3121 2. Girls & Boys 3. Feel 4 U 4. Controversy 5. blues song about a cockeyed woman who asks for pepper but looks at the salt 6. Satisfied 7. Down by the Riverside (instrumental featuring horn section) 8. Broken Heart Again 9. Love Is a Losing Game (Amy Winehouse tune sung by Shelby J) 10. Love Changes (Mother’s Finest tune, by Shelby again) 11. Thank You (the Sly Stone classic w/ Larry Graham on bass) 12. Hair (a Chaka Khan/Larry Graham oldie) 13. Sing a Simple Song (more Sly) 14. Everyday People (you know it’s Sly) 15. Alphabet Street
At this point, Prince and the band exited, and everyone expected an encore — except all we got was Prince’s speech about the authorities.
Here’s what was still left on the set list:
16. Baby Love 17. The Dance 18. Let’s Go 19. Anotherloverholeinyourhead 20. The Question of U 21. Peach 22. Lolita 23. Black Sweat 24. Kiss
What did you think of the late, late show? Please post your opinion here:

Two shows down, one to go.
After 45 minutes at Macy’s, Prince clocked in at two hours, 10 minutes at the Target Center. The concert kicked off on a nostalgia trip with semi-surprise guest Wendy Melvoin (of the Revolution) joining him for “Purple Rain” (usually a closer, not an opener) and “Take Me With U.” From there, Prince shredded his way through the next few songs, playing a Stratocaster with brute force. He then bounced between funky party starters and some tender gems, as you’ll see by the setlist.
Macy’s gig
When the Saints Go Marching In (band intro) 1. 3121 2. Girls & Boys 3. A Love Bizarre 4. Get on the Boat 5. Glamorous Life 6. Take Me With U 7. Guitar (Encore) 8. Crazy (Gnarls Barkley) 9. Let’s Go Crazy
Target Center
1. Purple Rain 2. Take Me With U 3. Guitar 4. Shhh 5. Musicology 6. Play That Funky Music (cover by Wild Cherry) 7. Let’s Go (the Cars) 8. Satisfied 9. Instrumental with Mike Phillips and Renato Neto (based off of What a Wonderful World)
Set with Wendy Melvoin (just the two of em): 10. Little Red Corvette 11. Raspberry Beret 12. new song 13. Sometimes It Snows in April
Back with the band: 14. Seven 15. Come Together 16. Do Me Baby (Prince on piano next for songs) 17. I Wanna Be Your Lover 18. How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore? 19. Diamonds & Pearls (just a snippet) 20. Cream (back on guitar) 21. U Got the Look 22. If I Was Your Girlfriend 23. Black Sweat 24. Kiss 25. Let’s Go Crazy (minus all the verses, plus Sheila E.)
Encore: 26. A Love Bizarre (Sheila E.) 27. Crazy (Shelby Johnson on vocals) 28. Nothing Compares 2 U 29. Glamorous Life (Sheila E.)
Let us know what you thought of the show(s). We’ll have a full wrapup on all the 7/7/7 mayhem in Monday’s Star Tribune.

At noon, he had one of his people call guitarist Wendy Melvoin, formerly of Prince & the Revolution, and summon her from L.A. to play that afternoon in Minneapolis.
After leaving her 14-month-old son with grandma, Melvoin headed to the airport. She couldn't arrive in time for the 4 p.m. performance at Macy's (which actually started at 5:10). In fact, she landed in the Twin Cities at 9:15 p.m., 45 minutes after the Target Center show was scheduled to begin.
Melvoin had performed with Prince in the past two weeks at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel so she was relatively up to speed. But when she got to Target Center, she received a surprise: "We're opening with 'Purple Rain,' " Prince said. "You're on."
It was grab your guitar and hit the stage at 10:05 p.m.
During the Target Center, Prince called Melvoin "my bestest friend in the world."
Is that true?
"Apparently," she said with a sarcastic shrug on Sunday night.
Melvoin will play at Prince's 21-concert run next month in London. For those, she'll bring her son and a nanny.
