Warner Home Video has officially announced catalog faves 'Purple Rain' and 'Out for Justice' will both Blu-ray and HD DVD this July.
Though a rather bizarre pairing of rock legend Prince and action-meister Steven Seagal, Warner says both titles will debut on July 24.

The Blu-ray and HD DVD versions of each will feature identical specs and extras, including 1080p/VC-1 transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround tracks (at 640kbps).
Mirroring its standard-def DVD counterpart, 'Out for Justice' will include only the film's theatrical trailer, while 'Purple Rain' will be packed with three retrospective featurettes, eight music videos and classic MTV coverage of the movie's 1984 premiere party.
Warner has set a list price of $28.99 apiece.

whilst the remastered ntsc disc is pretty decent, the 1080p version is far better, altho it's not the greatest HD transfer, but considering its a movie thats nearly 25 years old, it's still a good job. hopefully they will release UTCM and GB on HD too. a 5.1 remix of UTCM and GB would be fantastic. would be nice too if whoever had the rights to SOTT could do a HD release. it's also nice to see them release it on both formats. i've still got my pioneer laserdisc player connected to my plasma to watch the old discs that you can't get on dvd

these are the specs for both formats of purple rain btw

'Purple Rain' Gets Dual Blu-ray, HD DVD Dolby TrueHD Release

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that 'Purple Rain' will be Warner's first Blu-ray title to be issued with Dolby TrueHD audio. In fact, the first Warner/TrueHD title was last month's 'Letters from Iwo Jima.' We regret the error.

Audiophiles will be pleased to learn that according to updated specs for the July 24 next-gen release of 'Purple Rain,' the title is the latest in a growing number of cross-format Warner releases to include Dolby TrueHD audio on both Blu-ray and HD DVD.

Despite Warner Home Video's ongoing format-agnostic approach to the next-gen war, true parity in high-resolution audio specs has been hard to come by on the studio's cross-format releases. Numerous Warner HD DVD titles have enjoyed full-blown Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio, but their Blu-ray counterparts have often suffered by comparison with only standard Dolby tracks.
Recently, the studio had begun to bridge this gap by offering uncompressed PCM audio on the Blu-ray versions of some of its high-profile titles, including the recent top-seller 'The Departed, (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/departed.html)' and today's debut of 'Blood Diamond (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/blooddiamond.html).'
But the real holy grail for high-res audiophiles is Dolby TrueHD. Warner finally issued its first TrueHD Blu-ray title last month ('Letters from Iwo Jima'), and today it was revealed that the July 24 debut of 'Purple Rain' will be the second, followed by the cross-format bow for '300,' only a week later.
So, is this sudden surge in dual-format support of Dolby TrueHD a sign of things to come from Warner? We certainly hope so, as it's been a long time coming.
We'll keep you posted on all future Warner announcements of Dolby TrueHD-featured titles, as well as all of the studio's upcoming Blu-ray and HD DVD releases.
