Sinead O'Connor's Fight With Prince

Irish singer Sinead O'Conner (http://www.starpulse.com/Music/OConnor,_Sinead/) came to blows with flamboyant musician Prince (http://www.starpulse.com/Music/Prince/)after he objected to her covering his song Nothing Compares 2 U. The Purple Rain (http://www.starpulse.com/Music/Prince/Discography/album/P5182/R15804/) hit maker wrote the song in 1984 for funk band The Family (http://www.starpulse.com/music/The_Family/P38707/unknown/0/0/0/), but it was only until O'Conner's 1990 version that the track became an international success.
However, Prince was not happy she had covered the song as he had planned to give it to another female singer - and their meeting to discuss the matter did not go as planned. O'Conner says, "At the time he had a lot of female protégés and I had covered his song without having anything to do with him."
"He invited me to his house in Los Angeles and started to give out to me for swearing in interviews. When I told him to go f**k himself he got very upset and became quite threatening, physically. I ended up having to escape. He can pack a punch. A few blows were exchanged. All I could do was spit. I spat on him quite a bit."

there was an interview a few years back, i think on tv, and she mentioned something about having a pillow fight with prince, nothing violent or threatening. i remember reading in the nme a few weeks/months before she released her version, and i clearly remember thinking it was a strange choice as sinead only had one album out and a minor hit with mandinka, and was more of a cult star, perhaps in a similar way to amy winehouse not being so well known until her second album, but sinead's first album was more indie rock than the commercial stuff she released afterwards (altho her reggae cover album was pretty good), so it was a huge change for her when it came out, and the single certainly rocketed her to fame, she didn't have a big fan base at all, so people bought the single because they liked the song, not because of who was singing

there was another documentary on channel 4 about top 10/100/etc best love songs and i think st paul and rosie gaines both commented on the track. the story seems to go that prince created the album, and then offered it to st paul as a solo album, and prince took the inner sleeve photos and procalimed the subjects "the band". it's also been said that prince's lead vocals were removed from the original master tapes to allow for st pauls vocals. hopefully a mixdown still exists, to be released sometime in the future
