JONES was on the scene for a press conference yesterday at Madison Square Garden held by music legend and rockstar hero, Prince Rogers Nelson. On the brink of his last performance at Madison Square Garden for the Welcome 2 America tour—one of the highest grossing recent tours in the country, the brilliant performer announced his goal to pave the way for the next generation to embrace the arts and acheive greatness.
With that mission in mind, he gave a $1 million dollar donation to the Harlem Children's Zone and $250,000 each to The Uptown Dance Academy and The American Ballet Theatre, whose ballerina Misty Copeland performed with Prince during the tour.
Prince also donated the solid gold Fender Custom Stratocaster guitar which he has used during the “Welcome 2 America” tour to raise money for the Harlem Children’s Zone. The iconic instrument was auctioned off last night by Charity Buzz at the concert afterparty at The Darby.
During the press conference, 30 students from the Harlem Children's Zone got the chance to meet the musical icon. You could see how inspired and touched they were by Prince's dedication to the youth, his unparalleled musical success and his generosity. Harlem Children's Zone President and CEO Geoffrey Canada had this to say about the donation: "I want to thank Prince. I am touched and blown away by his generosity. This is unprecedented in my lifetime to see an artist come forward and invest in today's children."
As Prince brings his famed Welcome 2 America tour to new American cities, he promises to identify and donate to other worthy organizations throughout the nation in his mission to ensure the future of the arts.
