05/07 Het Sint-Pietersplein in Gent (http://www.thedawnexperience.co.uk/krantenkoppen/zoeken/gent.aspx?q=en_960m%21ohWX4E=&g=gent) liep dinsdagavond vol voor het concert van Prince, meer dan 14.000 fans waren present. Onze fotograaf zorgde voor exclusieve beelden dankzij een unieke locatie in een studentenkot.

De Lijn Oost-Vlaanderen legde 23 gratis bussen in en vervoerde tussen 16 en 21 uur ongeveer 5.400 concertgangers van de parking Flanders Expo naar het historische plein.
Bij organisator Greenhouse Talent is men bijzonder enthousiast. "Er werden nog heel wat tickets aan de kassa's verkocht, alles samen zijn 14.000 van de 15.000 kaartjes de deur uit. We kunnen alvast van een heel groot succes spreken."
De tweede concertdag, woensdag, was eerder al op enkele uren uitverkocht.

Ontario explained the Line 23 free buses and transported between 16 and 21 hours approximately 5,400 concert-goers from the parking Flanders Expo at the historic square.
At organizer Greenhouse Talent is one particularly enthusiastic. "There were still some tickets at the ticket office sold all together 14,000 of the 15,000 tickets out the door. We can already speak of a great success."

Pour le premier de ses deux concerts belges, Prince a offert un concert phénoménal de 3 heures trente incluant des reprises de Dylan, des Beatles, de Marley, des Troggs et de Michael Jackson.

Big up à Sharon Jones et à ses fidèles Dap-Kings pour une première partie de soul/r'n'b endiablée. On se réjouit pour l'ambassadrice du label Daptone, de Brooklyn de cette visibilité. Une visibilité énorme puisque Sharon et les Dap-Kings ont rejoint plus tard dans la soirée Prince sur scène pour un « Controversy » qui rappelait les belles heures de James Brown à l'Appolo d'Harlem .
Cette diablesse de Sharon, frangine virtuelle du « Godfather of soul » polissonne. Dans sa robe verte émeraude, elle invité un jeune homme (une quinzaine d'années à vue de nez) à la rejoindre sur scène pour une leçon de drague assez chaude. Public du festival Esperanzah !, sois présent le 5 août pour découvrir cette artiste incroyable qui prend, comme nous avons coutume de le répéter, littéralement feu sur scène.
La place Saint-Pierre à Gand, là même où Léonard Cohen s'est produit l'an dernier, est bien remplie. Sur les toits, aux fenêtres et balcons, on prend l'apéro. Certains ont même sorti des caméras. Prince s'en fout. Si il a décidé seulement en fin de journée de permettre à des photographes de lui tirer le portrait, en plein milieu de concert, il suggère au public de brandir son téléphone portable et appeler ses amis. Aujourd'hui, la musique se diffuse par téléphone ou caméra. Manu Chao nous disait pas plus tard que dimanche soir qu'il entend parfois des musiciens interpréter ses nouvelles chansons uniquement parce qu'elles circulent par d'autres réseaux.
Revenons aux choses sérieuses. 20h15 pétante. Une longue intro soul/jazz annonce l'arrivée du kid de Minneapolis. Et tant pis pour le jeu de mot facile mais l'artiste est sapé comme un prince. Costard jaune sable, fines lunettes, la classe avec un grand C. En une bonne demie-heure et avant un « Purple Rain » plutôt lubrique, Prince jette les bases de son concert. Jazz, soul, funk, rythm'n'blues, rock'n'roll avec des références évidentes comme Miles Davis, George Clinton et Funkadelic, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Sly and The Family Stone, que du lourd. Comme David Bowie avec une autre grammaire, Prince a digéré toutes ces influences pour en offrir une relecture plus personnelle.
Bête de scène incroyable, charmeur, un peu charlot aussi lorsqu'il demande au public comment il s'appelle et surtout, c'est ça le propre des grands artistes, le don de s'avoir s'entourer. Son New Power Generation comprend des musiciens d'enfer. Ils jouent tous comme des dieux. Les yeux fermés. Et suivent leur « Funky Boss» qui, d'un clignement de cil ou d'un regard, leur fait changer de tempo. Les choristes possèdent une voix chaude et douce comme un thé au miel et ne manquent pas de charme. On ne va pas balancer mais la guitariste a fait de l'effet. Première surprise du show : la reprise de « Come Together » des Beatles. On connaissait celle d'Ike et Tina Turner, plus soul. Celle de Prince est funk à mort. Deuxième choc : « Make you feel my love » de Bob Dylan, méconnaissable si on connaît pas le texte du Zim. Ensuite, n'ayons pas peur des mots, c'est plus qu'un grain de folie qui secoue la place. Z'êtes prêts ? « Let's go crazy », « Delirious », « 1999 », « Little Red Corvette » et « Nothing Compares 2 U ». Rien que çà? Si si rien que des tubes, des tubes et encore des tubes. Et dernier choc avant que l'animal quitte la scène : un meddley qui comprend « Waiting in vain » de Marley couplé avec « Sweet Jane » de Lou Reed et « Wild Thing » des Troggs !
Mais Prince, comme Manu Chao d'ailleurs aime la scène et joue chaque morceau comme si c' était le dernier. Alors quand il nous dit au revoir, sincèrement touché par ce public de rêve, on ne le croit qu'à moitié. Et c'est reparti pour un tour avec « Raspberry Beret », « Cream » et un très bel hommage à Michael Jackson avec « Don't Stop Til Get Enough ».
Il fallait voir Prince revenir pour un deuxième rappel. Du genre «Vous en voulez encore ? Vous n'avez pas encore ramassé assez ?> Et bien non, « ket ». Et pan « Kiss » fait exploser le public. Troisième rappel, un chouette meddley qui inclut « Sing O The Times ». Avant le feu d'artifice inattendu et sympa, Prince revient pour une quatrième fois rendre hommage (encore un) à son ancienne partenaire Sheila E. (« A love bizarre ») et nous fait tous reprendre un « We like funky music » qu'on chantait encore à Bruxelles. Bon, ok, le feu d'artifice et puis basta. Et bien non. Au piano, il nous envoie le superbe « Sometimes it snows in april » avant de nous achevé avec un « Peach » plus proche de Chuck Berry que de l'original. Sans doute parce qu'il a joué 3 heures 30, Prince n'a pas fait son traditionnel after show. Ce sera pour ce soir. On vous tient au courant. Promis. Juré.

Prince speelde opnieuw meer dan drie uur lang. "Het was een concert dat mensen nog heel lang zal heugen", zegt VRT-journalist Kevin Major die ook aanwezig was.

Net als tijdens het eerste concert speelde hij het eerste uur weinig hits, maar naarmate de set vorderde dreef hij het hittempo op. De zanger heeft de decibellimiet niet overschreden. Dinsdag waren er klachten van geluidsoverlast.
"Ik vond dat het verschil duidelijk te merken was vandaag", zegt schepen van Cultuur, Toerisme en Feestelijkheden Lieven Decaluwé (ProGent). Hij vindt de concerten voor herhaling vatbaar. "We weten dat het met een topartiest lukt in Gent. Je moet een artiest ook zijn ding laten doen, en als je nu Prince hebt, misschien wel de beste performer van dit moment, dan moet je wel eens iets kunnen verteren."

Prince heeft geen afterparty meer gegeven na zijn optreden in Gent. Hierover werd vooraf nochtans druk gespeculeerd. Aan het kunstencentrum Vooruit waren er na het concert heel wat fans opgedaagd om te zien of Prince daar nog zou optreden, maar dat was niet het geval.
