TDX: Hi Jason, Welcome to the Dawn Experience ...For those of us who do not know anything about you tell us about yourself.
JPD: I am a member of the "Musical Peterson Family" of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I am the nephew of Saint Paul Peterson, formerly of the Time and the Family.
I have been a professional musician since I was 15 years old, as a Saxophone, Keyboard player, and Vocalist. I have toured and worked with some great artists including, Prince, Richard Marx, Donny Osmond, Alexander O'Neal, and Jimmy Jam And Terry Lewis. I am currently touring with Michael Bolton.
TDX: Your new CD In My Life is very good. How long did the project take to make and who was involved?
JPD: Thank you!!! I wrote "In My Life" during 2007. A good portion of it was written and recorded in my hotel rooms on the road. I have a portable studio that I take with me.
I wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the CD. I did a few collaborations as well. Tre Balfour, Schuyler Deale, David Delhomme, and Mico Wave also worked on the CD with me.
TDX: The songs on the CD are mainly smooth RnB. What is it about RnB music that you like and would you ever consider doing a rock album (or some other musical genre)?
JPD: I like the sexyness of R and B. I like many genres of music, but Smooth R and B is one of my favorites. I like Funk and Rock as well!
TDX: Are all the songs based on your own real life experiences? Is “The Prodigal Son” autobiographical?
JPD: I think so. I think as an artist you draw on your life experiences as well as a little imagination. The "Prodigal Son" was written for a movie of the same title. It hasn't come out yet. It is a bit autobiographical as well!
TDX: Who are your musical heroes and why?
JPD: Prince is my all time musical hero! Growing up in Minneapolis and being a musician, that is an obvious choice! When I was in high school, my uncle Saint Paul did a little movie called "Purple Rain". That movie changed my life. When I saw Paul in that movie i was like: "I can do that"! I've been in music ever since!
It was a dream come true to be able to eventually be able to work with Prince! I also am influenced by Stevie Wonder and Babyface.
TDX: If you were not a musician, what do you think would have been your chosen career?
JPD: Growing up I wanted to be a professional baseball player.
TDX: If the opportunity arose, would you sign to a major record company like Sony or Warner Bros.?
JPD: I probably would simply because of the marketing power of the major labels. But an artist doesn't necessarily need a major company to get his or her music out to the world anymore.
TDX: What are your thoughts on the music business today and where do you see it in 10 years time?
JPD:I think that it is a great time for independent artists. Music is still in great demand and with the internet there are many ways to get your music "Out There" today.
I really don't know where it will be in ten years. The business is changing so much. I think that Major labels are slowly losing their power. But ultimately it will still be about the music!
TDX: What do you think of Prince as a person and as a musician?
JPD: Prince is one of my favorite human beings of all time! What some people don't know is how funny he is! He is obviously one of the most talented, complete musicians will ever see and I am blessed to have had the opportunity to hang and learn from him!
TDX: Do you think Prince (or any other artist) is right to censor his fans/supporters in the way that he has with Web Sheriff over the use of his image for no personal gain over the internet?
JPD: I think that is a personal choice of an artist although I don't understand what the problem is. I think it would be an honor to have your fans wanting to put up your images and talk about your music.
TDX: Could you tell us a funny story about Prince?
JPD: I was working with Carmen Electra's band opening for Prince on the Diamonds and Pearls tour. Prince had just fired all of Carmen's band except for me and Morris Hayes.
We were then joined by the NPG band for Carmen's gig. In rehearsal I was at the keyboard with Prince. I got a little hardheaded with him and he said "JP, do you notice some people are missing?" I said "Yes" and he said "You don't want to be missing do you" and I said "No Sir" and we went about our business.
TDX: What are your hopes for the future? Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years time?
JPD: I hope to continue working with great artists as well as continuing to put out my own CD's and touring them as well.
TDX: What would you like to say to your fans in the UK?
JPD: I've been coming to the U.K. for many years touring with Prince, Donny Osmond, and Michael Bolton. I absolutely love it there and I appreciate your love for good music! Love you guys!
TDX: Thanks Jason... We wish you every success with your new CD and all that you do in the future.
JPD: Thank you!!!! Love JP
