Paul McCartney has announced that he is to give away his current studio album Memory Almost Full, with the Mail On Sunday on May 18.
The album, which originally came out last year through Starbucks' music imprint Hear Music, has already sold 100,000 copies in the UK to date (OCC) and reached number five in the UK album charts. However, with the free giveaway the album has a potential to reach upto 2 million homes.
Speaking to music industry business weekly Music Week, The Mail on Sunday's managing director Stephen Miron commented on the deal, saying: "If you look at how he came to do the Starbucks' album deal, it was a result of feeling unhappy with the music industry and looking at alternative ways of distribution. I can't think of anyone else who has come up with the right alternative distribution than us."
Previous album giveaways through the Mail on Sunday have included Prince's Planet Earth, Simply Red and UB40.
The KinksRay Davies also gave away his new studio album via The Sunday Times last year.

it's not a bad album, but it's not as good as the previous album which was pretty good. i'm a big beatles fan, but pauls solo work of the last 20 years has been pretty lame

McCartney was involved in 15 albums during this period: five solo albums; one album with his wife Linda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_McCartney); and nine albums with Wings (including a greatest hits compilation). Wingspan features songs from each of those albums, as well as a few singles that had not been included on Wings Greatest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wings_Greatest).
Wings was active from 1971 to 1980, but this set also includes material from McCartney's albums from earlier (1970-71) and later (1980-84) years. It does not, however, include any of McCartney's well-known collaborations with Stevie Wonder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevie_Wonder) or Michael Jackson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jackson), which took place during the latter period.
The album is separated into two distinct sets: a "Hits" component which highlights commercially successful material, while "History" showcases less generally known McCartney favourites from the same period. On the U.S. release, 14 of the 18 songs on "Hits" were performed by Wings, but only 9 of the 22 songs on "History" are by Wings.
Released in 2001 in conjunction with a prime time TV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV) documentary simply called Wingspan, the associated soundtrack was a commercial success, reaching #5 in the UK and #2 in the US, where it was knocked off the top spot by Destiny's Child (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destiny%27s_Child)'s Survivor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivor_%28album%29). The album was eventually certified Double Platinum by RIAA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA). A DVD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD) release of the documentary, which dealt with McCartney's relationship with Linda Eastman and their eventual marriage, the traumatic final year of the Beatles' career and his own role in their breakup, and the story of Wings' formation and career through the 1970s toward their final dissolution in 1980, was produced by Mary McCartney, who also interviewed her father in the film.
