Nikka Costa
Pebble To A Pearl (http://www.okayplayer.com/)
(Stax : 2008)
Fiery Nikka Costa brings the funk and soul on her latest, Pebble to a Pearl, making it hard to keep still as she slithers her way in and out of styles to make you dance. From her soul foundation, Costa follows the diverse pattern laid by her music arranger father, Don, layering rock, funk and pop melodies on top of her positive messages. There’s nothing revelatory here, but if you can get past the holleration, there are some funky gems to be found.
Complete with handclap accompaniment, the playful album opener, “Stuck to You,” is only a glimpse of the fun Costa has with words as she puts her spin on the ‘if you’re this, then I’m that’ format betraying where her own musical taste lies with the line, “If you a bride, I’ll be your wedding/If you were soul, I’ll be your Otis Redding.” “Can’t Please Everybody” is more of a raucous good time, showing off more of Costa’s attitude. It is, however, one of the many times Costa’s voices leans toward Mariah Carey territory, hollering more than singing, but for the most part, it’s not obnoxious.
When dealing with the same old concepts of love, loss and regret, Costa tries to infuse the themes with as much musical variety as possible. From the ska-tinged “Damn I Said It First” to the moodier “Loving You,” Costa’s ADHD gives the listener plenty of genres from which to choose. Costa’s sharp songwriting is evident on “Love to Love You Less,” a funny, bluesy ballad cataloging the reasons she stays with her dumb, inattentive boyfriend. “Crybaby” is a more biting look at the dissolution of a relationship, as the begrudged woman finds joy in the tears of her ex.
“Keep Wanting More” is one of the album’s strongest, bringing Costa’s screaming energy and some funky guitar licks into a perfect storm of toe-tapping, jump around music. It doesn’t give you room to breathe until it’s good and ready with a well-deserved exhalation by Costa at the end.
“Pebble to a Pearl” has its softer moments, but Costa is most impressive when she steps back and lets her voice go at full blast. The gentler moments are less memorable, though out of sheer kindness, she probably has to let her listeners rest. Costa’s blue-eyed soul may lack some of the depth from the classic Stax era, but her “Pearl” is still a worthy jewel in the collection.
