A lead vocalist in the renowned gospel group, the Staple Singers, from a very young age, Mavis Staples has had a career that has spanned more than five decades. During that time, Staples was also deeply involved in the 1960s civil rights movement, and later worked with R&B/pop icons such as Curtis Mayfield and Prince. Though her solo work is often overlooked, her post-millennial recordings have found her in fine form, particularly 2007's much-lauded WE'LL NEVER TURN BACK.
Put it on your Xmas list!
