| Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain | |||
Producer:
Prince
Highest Pop Chart Position: |
Notes |
||
| Prince's biggest selling album to date..
10 million+ in the US, 5 million+ elsewhere. 25th best selling album of all
time. The album and film which made Prince a massive
international household name and placed Minnesota on the map. "When
Doves Cry" became Warner Bros. fastest-selling single
("When Doves Cry" became Prince's 1st top 10 single in the UK).
Prince had the No.1 single, album and film (only equaled by The Beatles).
Easily
accessible and commercial, Prince & The Revolution hit the big time with this release,
along with top class production and cool innovation made this one a certified
winner. Standout Tracks: All of them! Experience Rating: The world went crazy (10/10) |

| Single Releases: Let's Go Crazy/Take Me With U [UK chart position No.7 Feb 85], When Doves Cry [UK chart position No.4 June 84], I Would Die 4 U [UK chart position No.58 Dec 84], Purple Rain [UK chart position No.8 Sept 84] | |||
| Apollonia 6 - Apollonia 6 | |||
Producers:
Apollonia 6, The Starr*Company
|
Notes | ||
| The name changed but the
concept remained the same. Vanity dropped out for a solo career, so Apollonia took over
and presented an album which was just as much light-hearted fun as the first one.
Purple funk all the way, though it's uncertain just how deep the purple one himself was
involved. (Apollonia 6 and various members of The Revolution received credit to all the
songs on the album). Tongue in cheek sex. Standout Tracks: Blue Limousine, A Million Miles (I Love You), Some Kinda Lover Paisley Involvement: High Experience Rating: We like 'em in their lingerie (7/10)

| Single Releases: Sex Shooter | |||
| Sheila E - The Glamorous Life | |||
Producers: Sheila E, The Starr*Company
|
Notes | ||
| Purple funk with a Latino
flavour were the ingredients for Sheila E's 1st album, it was a combination which worked
extremely well. Prince produce and wrote all of the material
("Noon Rendezvous" co-written with Sheila E). Sheila's excellent percussion work adding that extra zest
and flavour to the Minneapolis sound. Standout Tracks: Noon Rendezvous, Olivers House, Next Time Wipe The Lipstick Off Your Collar, The Glamorous Life Paisley Involvement: High Experience Rating: Hit those timbales girl! (7/10)

|||
| Single Releases: The Belle Of St. Mark, The Glamorous Life [UK chart position No.16 Feb 85] | |||
| The Time - Ice Cream Castle | |||
Producers:
Morris Day, The Starr*Company
|
Notes | ||
| Minus original members Monte Moir, Jam and Lewis; and adding 3 new faces (incl.
a young fresh outta high school St. Paul Peterson), The Time came back
at us with Ice Cream Castle. The title track carried a serious
message (about interracial relationships) uncharacteristic of previous Time songs, but the underlying
"cool" humour remained in the other tracks. Prince (under
the pseudonym of The Starr*Company) once again
produce and wrote/co-wrote all the songs. Standout Tracks: Ice Cream Castle, My Drawers, Jungle Love, The Bird Paisley Involvement: High Experience Rating: Are y'all ready for a brand new dance? (8/10)

| Single Releases: Ice Cream Castle, Jungle Love, The Bird | |||
| Vanity - Wild Animal | ||||
Producers:
Bill Wolfer, Vanity
|
Notes | |||
| Vanity deserted
the purple clique just before the Purple Rain explosion, and Motown immediately
snapped her up thinking that they were onto a certified winner.
On her first
solo album for the label she was given co-producer credit.... What a big
mistake and huge disappointment it must have been for the label...!!!
Here (without the help of Susan or Brenda) the limits of her 'vocal range' were truly magnified in which she breathlessly
camps, vamps, coos, moans, rambles and screams through a series of embarrassing,
instantly forgettable, self-penned, sex-themed songs. The music
itself sounding like the soundtrack to the TV show "Miami Vice"
- very dated. Obviously playing up on
the image Prince created for her as a sexy dominatrix - but without
any class or style. 'Strap On "Robbie Baby"' is a very poor
relation to the Vanity 6 outtake 'Vibrator'. Behind the plastic smiles... those Motown exec's must have been wondering what on earth have they let themselves in for. Standout Tracks: Wild Animal Paisley Involvement: None Experience Rating: Such an ugly mess...!! (2/10)
