| Prince and The NPG - O(+> | |||
Producer:
Prince
Highest Pop Chart Position: |
Notes | ||
| Very much a continuation
from the last album musically (minus the voice of Rosie Gaines). The concept for this
album was originally to be something akin to a "funky rock-soap operetta"
featuring the voice of reporter Vanessa Bartholomew (Kirstie Alley) linking
the saga in-between the tracks. Most of her contributions didn't make it in the final cut, making the album's storyline indecipherable.
A concept video featuring most of the songs was later released, but didn't help towards
making the storyline any clearer. It was later revealed that the album was inspired by and
written for his girlfriend at the time Mayte. Standout Tracks: Sexy MF, I Wanna Melt With U, The Continental, Sweet Baby, And God Created Woman Experience Rating: Tune in again for the next thrilling installment. (7/10) |

| Morris Day - Guaranteed | |||
Producers:
Morris Day, Bernard Belle, Michael Stokes, Stanley Brown, Eastcoast Productions
|
Notes | ||
| Morris Day's fourth and
final album for Warner Bros. (Reprise) enlisted for the first time the help of several
producers with the idea, one assumes, to update Morris's sound. The old saying "If it
ain't broke, don't try to fix it" rings especially true for this album. The
whole set lacked that special Morris ingredient... humour. All songs
written/co-written by Morris were pretty weak by his standards and it didn't
seem like Morris's heart was into this project at all. The only memorable tracks
being the two produced by Bernard Belle. Disappointing. Standout Tracks: Gimme Whatcha Got, Guaranteed Paisley Involvement: None Experience Rating: Too many producers spoil the funk. (5/10)

| Carmen Electra - Carmen Electra | |||
Producer: Paisley Park
|
Notes | ||
| The latest in the long
line of sexy Prince protégé's. Carmen explodes onto the scene with an attitude
to prove that white girls can rap. Which was probably true on some of the tracks displayed
here, particularly "Step To The Mic" (vocal assistance coming from Brit. rapper
Monie Love), but pop-flavoured fluff like "Go Go Dancer" and "Everybody Get
On Up" offsets any gains she had made. She has talent even though much of her rapping
style sounds too rigid and the lame musical arrangements of some of the tracks didn't do
her any favours. She's a B-list Hollywood celebrity, TV presenter and Playboy centrefold now, but
steered in the right direction and given the right material, her recording career could've been just as if
not more successful. Standout Tracks:Good Judy Girlfriend, Step To The Mic, Fantasia Erotica, Just A Little Lovin' Paisley Involvement: High Experience Rating: Shhh..!! Can you keep a secret? (7/10)

| The NPG - Goldnigga | |||
Producer:
NPG
|
Notes | ||
| First incarnation of The
NPG with their own record and the newly formed independent NPG label with rapper Tony M handling most
of the lead vox. Hardcore NPG funk/jazz/blues with Tony's raps over the top
and Prince ever present in the background. The party
only pauses for the socio-commentary half-rap/sung mid-tempo ballad "2Gether". Standout Tracks: Black MF In The House, 2Gether, Call The Law, Johnny Paisley Involvement: High Experience Rating: NPG's in da House! (8/10) |

| Lois Lane - Precious | |||
|
Producers:
Prince, Kirk Johnson, Lois
L., Keith Cohen
|
Notes | ||
| Not surprisingly, Prince hooked
up with this group from the Netherlands (also known as Lois L. in the USA
for copyright reasons relating to Superman), as it is fronted by sultry
twins Monique and Suzanne Klemann. Also not surprising is the fact that
the best songs on the album (Qualified, Sex, I Wanna Be and Crying) were
either written or produced (or both) by Prince and recorded at Paisley
Park. The other tracks on the album are best described as funk-lite, and
Prince’s influence is felt on these as well. Not unpleasant, but not
entirely memorable either… Standout Tracks: Sex, Qualified, Crying, Forever Paisley Involvement: Medium Experience Rating: Funky foray from a previously funkless foreign act... (6/10) |
